NEW YORK—The world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company Shen Yun Performing Arts staged its first 2022 season’s New York performance to a packed audience at Lincoln Center on March 10.
Kerry Doyle and her fiancé Patrick Mac said that Shen Yun provides great entertainment and is educational as well.

“It’s been a very enjoyable experience to see a totally different world that I don’t know much about. To see it and hear about it and see the interpretation [has] been very enjoyable and educational, and calming,” said Ms. Doyle, who works in sales and finance.

“A lot of times theater is entertaining and helps to take away from your every day. This has an education behind it and a history behind it, and to see things in a different light, as a different culture, I find it enjoyable.”

Ms. Doyle purchased tickets to see New York-based Shen Yun for her fiancé as a Christmas gift.

“He’s very into history and reading,” said Ms. Doyle.

And Mr. Mac said he enjoyed the performance.

“I think it’s very unique, ... very elegant,” he said.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of culture. The company strives to present the beauty of China before communism.

Mr. Mac shared his support for Shen Yun’s mission to revive the culture.

“You’ve got to get people to see what is lost—and find it again,” he said.

“To open people’s eyes to something and to see in a different way and try to understand how people are feeling in this situation—this educates people in different ways through the art. I think it’s very interesting,” Ms. Doyle added.

Shen Yun’s orchestra, which performs music accompanying the dances, features traditional Chinese instruments being supported by a classical Western orchestra. The music pieces performed by the orchestra are all original works written by Shen Yun’s own resident composers.

“The music is very calming,” said Mr. Mac.

Ms. Doyle agreed with her fiancé.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s a good change—it is very calming,” she said.

‘Superior to So Many Other Shows’

Alan Mercier, a print and technical designer, who creates original swimwear designs, and Matthew Yee, an interior designer, Matthew Yee, were also in the audience on Thursday evening.
As designers, they shared their artistic opinion of the performance.

“It’s phenomenal. I think it is superior to so many other shows. I think their techniques and the way they dance, the choreography, the synchronization is really amazing. Thirty people on stage—it is so beautifully synchronized, it’s amazing to look at,” said Mr. Mercier.

Mr. Yee also praised the performance.

“It’s a great show, it’s really fun. Very interesting, particularly nice complement to an evening,” Mr. Yee said.

As a designer, Mr. Mercier noticed Shen Yun’s use of color and fabrics.

“The colors inspire people as well. When you see greens and corals just flying up in the air—like the sleeves, it’s just magical. To me it’s really beautiful. They think about every detail, the fabrics,” he said.
