ESCONDIDO, Calif.—“It is just an excellent production,” said Anne Rosser who attended with her husband Matthew Charles Eggaro. The couple saw the Shen Yun matinee on Saturday, Dec. 30 at the California Center for the Arts.
Mrs. Rosser has visited China and Mongolia, so she felt that she “need[ed] to see it because of the culture and the art. And I would definitely recommend it and would come back to see it next year.”
Though she has traveled to Asia, Mrs. Rosser noted that she has never seen a show like Shen Yun. “Understanding China and music and its poetry, and it is all so beautifully expressed in this production. I love the music,” she said. “The choreography is beautiful.
Mrs. Rosser is a board member of the San Diego Senior Games Association and a former president of the Pacific Beach Kiwanis Club. Her husband, Mr. Eggaro, is a retired member of the Navy.
The couple also appreciated the ethnic dances. “So, you know dance is all part of movement, and so I taught dancing—folk dance. So, looking at the ethnic dances of China is always very interesting,” said Mrs. Rosser.
Mr. Eggaro chimed in, explaining that he was in the Navy at the time when communism first spread into China. “And everybody was leaving. It was a very sad place,” he said. “I can’t believe how sad the place was. People had no food. It was terrible.”
One of Shen Yun’s primary goals is to revive China’s 5,000 years of culture, after more than 60 years of communist rule in China, and especially during the Cultural Revolution, traditional Chinese culture was all but wiped out.
Mrs. Rosser has great admiration for traditional Chinese culture. “When [people] see this, they understand the country through the culture so much better when they see performances and shows like this.”
Mrs. Rosser added, “They understand the music, and you understand the history and everything. It’s a long history in China—many, many years.”
