A mutual defense treaty between the U.S. and the Philippines requires both nations to support each other if either country is attacked.
The incident is the latest development in a series of confrontations between the two nations in the region.
China’s actions are in violation of Philippine laws and amount to “serious breaches of diplomatic protocols and conventions,” a Filipino official said.
