If you had to hazard a guess, who rules the roost in the presidential household? Is the man in charge always the man in charge, or is the First Lady the secret sovereign of the home? Perhaps it’s more egalitarian?

Melania Trump has certainly proven herself to be a strong woman, graceful and poised in all scenarios. She is publicly steadfast in her support of her husband and yet also willing and able to defend him in occasional times of strife. Melania has also intimated in many interviews that she’s devoted to the upbringing of the presidential couple’s 13-year-old son, Barron.

Our “FLOTUS” certainly has her own opinions and is not afraid to voice them, but how far does her influence extend?

As the use of technology extends further and further into the domestic environment (think Smart products, home security, even Alexa), how do couples prevent one another from getting so sucked into managing their home environment that they forget about basic human interaction?

Well, according to Melania, saying what you think doesn’t hurt.

The First Lady made a business-related visit to Giza in Egypt in late 2018, and during the trip, she kindly made time to speak with reporters. Some of her answers to their questions were very illuminating.

The president’s wife was asked about her reasons for taking such business trips, and more specifically about her role in advising her husband. Speaking to CNN, Melania replied: “Well, I don’t always agree with what he thinks and I tell him that. I give him my honest opinion and honest advice.”

“Sometimes he listens, sometimes he doesn’t,” she continued, “but I have my own voice, my opinions, and it’s very important for me that I express what I feel.”

One daring interviewer even asked, “Have you ever told him to put his phone down?” Melania replied in the affirmative, to a chorus of delighted giggles from the crowd around her.

That sounds refreshingly typical of most marital dynamics! Kudos to the First Lady for asserting her opinion. If anybody is unlikely to be able to put their phone down, surely it’s the President of the United States of America. That’s one phone that must be perennially ringing off the hook (not that telephone hooks exist anymore, of course, but try telling that to Merriam Webster).

The First Lady has long been an advocate for women and children. She has her own busy agenda when it comes to charitable visits and building international relationships with important figureheads and organizations.

Melania was photographed beside First Lady Entissar Amer of Egypt during her recent visit, and she uploaded the powerful picture to her Instagram account with the caption: “An unbelievable experience visiting the Great Pyramid and Sphinx in #Egypt last week. Thank you President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi & First Lady Entissar Amer,” she added, “for welcoming me with such warm hospitality.”

In the photograph, the pair look striking. Dressed to the nines and walking with purpose, if Melania Trump asked us to put our phones down, we think we'd quickly oblige!
