Three Dutch marines detained by Libyan authorities were set to be released Thursday according to Moammar Gadhafi’s son, Saif al-Islam.

The marines were taken prisoner last week after a failed rescue mission.

The Greek air force sent a plane to pick the marines up from Libya’s capital Tripoli, Dutch media reported. Saif al-Islam, told Reuters that the marines would be handed over to the Maltese and Greeks.

“We told them, don’t come back again without our permission,” he said adding that Libya is keeping their helicopter.

The coalition government in the Netherlands has been under fierce criticism from the opposition since the incident occurred.

The marines were sent to rescue two Dutch nationals, but landed in a territory filled with armed pro-Gadhafi supporters. According to Libyan authorities the marines committed a grave violation of international law by entering Libya without permission.
