A dog whose owner was fatally stabbed has been waiting outside the hospital where his owner died for the last four months.

The dog turned up at the Santa Casa de Novo Horizonte hospital in Brazil four months ago, according to local media reports.

The dog had reportedly chased the ambulance that was taking his 59-year-old owner, a homeless man, to hospital. His owner had been in a fight and later died from his injuries.

But the pet continues to wait for his owner on a rug outside the hospital reception, Brazil’s O Globo reported.

Hospital staff gave the loyal dog food and water, and found a new owner in a local kennel who could take him in. However, the dog escaped the kennels that were three kilometers (1.8 miles) away, and returned to the hospital door, waiting for his owner to come back.

The financial director of Santa Casahospital, Osvaldo Palota, described the animal as “extremely tame, docile, and quiet.”

Over the entire four months, the dog never tried to enter the hospital.

Local Cristine Sardella, a lawyer, was touched to learn about the dog’s story and shared pictures of the faithful pet on Facebook.

“We have a lot to learn from animals,“ she wrote. ”This dog stays every day at the door of the Santa Casa de novo horizonte hospital waiting for its owner who unfortunately passed away.

“He may be waiting in vain, but the love he feels for his owner is eternal.”

In a similar touching case, a little dog refused to leave her later owner’s grave, two months after her owner’s death.
