ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Kevin Denny, founder and CEO of Turbo LLC., attended the evening showing of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the California Center for the Arts on Feb. 28.

Mr. Denny was fascinated by the performance’s exploration of China’s rich cultural history.

“It’s a look at the Chinese culture that we don’t get to see very frequently,” he said.

The Shen Yun website states, “For 5,000 years divine culture flourished in the land of China. Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through breathtaking music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing back this glorious culture.”

Established in 2006, New York-based Shen Yun is a non-profit organization that has dedicated itself to bringing 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to life. In just a few short years, it has become a global phenomenon, with four companies touring every year in up to 20 countries and over 100 cities.

There were many aspects of the show that Mr. Denny considered praise worthy.

“It’s beautifully choreographed, colorful, spiritual,” said Mr. Denny. “There’s a wonderful understanding of how deep those values are. And how difficult it is to express [them].”

“Whether set in the past or in contemporary China, every dance embodies traditional Chinese values. Ideals of loyalty, filial piety, and veneration for the divine are cherished and celebrated. Heroes are extolled for their compassion and tolerance as much as their courage or determination when facing adversity,” explains the Shen Yun website.

“I love what they said about ‘Truth, Compassion, Tolerance,’ added Mr. Denny. “Deep, wonderful values.”

As the night drew to a close, Mr. Denny was left with sense of peace, as well as a feeling of thankfulness, for being able to see the performance.

In his parting words, Mr. Denny gave some advice to the performances’ future audience members.

“I would say open your hearts and minds and enjoy something unique and special.”
