Julian Assange appeared in a U.K. court on Monday for the first day of his extradition hearing.

The 39-year old founder of the WikiLeaks organization is wanted by Swedish authorities for questioning over allegations of sexual assault and rape of two Swedish women.

Assange’s lawyer Geoffrey Robertson suggested that his client could end up being extradited to the United States if he goes to Sweden. According to the lawyers representing Assange, he could face the death penalty if extradited to the United States, or end up in Guantanamo Bay.

The representative for Swedish authorities, Clare Montgomery, denied this would happen saying the country offers protection against such violations.

In November last year WikiLeaks began releasing what totaled to 251,287 secret U.S. Embassy cables, sparking large controversy around the world. To date, 3,871 documents have been published.
