When you have dips in energy throughout the day or feel sleep deprived, do you reach for caffeine or sugar? These “quick fixes” for energy will only leave you feeling more depleted later. Over time, if you’re always self-medicating with some form of unnatural energy, this pattern can lead to a constant feeling of fatigue. If you’re riding the energy roller coaster, try one of these 5 tips next time you feel a slump:

Drink Fresh Water

Feeling tired is often a sign of dehydration. Sometimes when we think we need a sugar rush or caffeine fix, our body is really asking for it’s most simple form of liquid nourishment — pure H2O! If you really want to take it to the next level, squeeze in some lemon. This will help your digestion, and a strong digestive system is key to keeping energy levels high.

Take a Walk

Don’t underestimate the power of movement! Feeling sluggish and sedentary can cause your energy levels to hit a low. Taking a walk around the block when you’re feeling tired can actually rejuvenate your senses and get your blood pumping, waking you up, boosting your energy and your mood.

Eat (or Drink!) Your Greens

Dark leafy greens are one of the most energizing foods available. They are full of vitmains, minerals and antioxidants, and they receive their energy from the sun — so when you eat them, you’re essentially adding the sun’s energy to your body! For quick absorption of the greens, try a green juice or a smoothie with greens powder.

Go Upside Down

Yoga inversions are great for relieving stress and increasing blood flow to the brain, elevating overall energy levels. You can simply lay on your back and put your legs up the wall, or if you know how to safely do more advanced inversions like shoulder stand, headstand or handstand…go ahead – flip your body, flip your perspective, and get that blood flowing!

Listen to Upbeat Music

One of the best ways to raise your energy level quickly is to put on a song you love – and if you can take a dance break, even better! Our brain’s pleasure centers are activated when we hear music. Check out some of Dr. Frank Lipman’s favorite music from around the world!
