A 10-year-old saved a woman, 80, who had fallen on ice that had accumulated in her garage in Michigan, it was reported.

Danny DiPietro, 10, initially thought it was a dog that made a loud sound, but it turned out to be an 80-year-old woman identified as Kathleen St. Onge, who lives by herself in Howell, Mich., according to WXYZ-TV.

“It was late at night and super cold out and their garage was open and something just didn’t feel right,” he told the station.

He later told his mother, Dawn, to investigate the matter. She took the family dog to the home where St. Onge lived and saw the woman in her garage, waiving her hands for help.

“I was so scared, but happy she was alive,” Dawn said.

She went back and called 911 and sent her husband to cover the woman with a blanket before emergency service workers arrived on the scene.

St. Onge’s daugher, Sandy Mitter, told a local paper that her mother slipped on Saturday night after she went out to eat dinner. She was not able to get up.

“We think she laid there for two to two-and-a-half hours,” Mitter said. “She kept trying to yell for help and was banging on the wall for neighbors.”

She described DiPietro as heroic. “Thank you so much,” she said. “You’re my hero.”

“He saved her life, that’s for sure,” Mitter told the paper. “And I don’t even have the words to say how grateful we are.”

DiPietro, who is in the fifth grade, said it’s “cool” to be considered a hero.
