If you still don’t have a passport or need a renewal, it’s a good idea to do it as soon as possible. The U.S. State Department has officially announced an increase in fees for passports, passport cards, and other passport services to take effect Tuesday, July 13. For adults, the total applicant fee for first-time passports, increased by $35, and is now up to $135. Passport renewals remain at $110. Total applicant fees for first-time passport cards are also up to $55 and a renewal costs $30. The passport card allows for travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry. It cannot be used for international air travel. The total applicant fee for a minor’s passport book (anyone younger than 16) has been raised $20 to $105 and a passport card to $40. For other services, expedited processing remains at $60, but additional pages went from being free to costing, $82. File searches, required if you are unable to present evidence of citizenship, jumped from costing $60 to $150. To apply for a passport, applicants require a certified copy of birth or naturalization certificate, a valid picture ID, two passport photos, and payment of related fees. To renew, the original passport must also be presented.
