Ontario Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth wants Ottawa to look at its definition of when an unborn child becomes alive.

Woodworth wants Parliament to examine if current law reflects scientific reality, that a fetus in the later stages of gestation is not considered alive.

“A recent poll disclosed that 80 percent of Canadians believe that Canadian law protects the fundamental human rights of children before birth in the later stages of gestation,” said a release issued by Woodworth.

“In fact, the opposite is true. Canadian law provides no human rights protection whatsoever for children before the moment of complete birth.”

“This means that in Canada a child is legally considered to be sub-human while his or her little toe remains in the birth canal, even if he or she is breathing.”

Woodworth suggests the current definition is outdated and was defined before medical science and the principles of human rights were advanced enough.

Harper has said he would not re-open the abortion debate but some Conservative backbench MPs are dissatisfied with that.
