SEATTLE—“I just loved it,” said software engineer Supriya Kumari after seeing Shen Yun Performing Art in Seattle on April 6.

“It was very colorful, very nice, and it just totally interested you,” she said at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. “It just got you to look at it; I just loved it.”

Ms. Kumari took special note of Shen Yun’s use of color, which is largely integrated through handmade costumes that represent different traditions from China’s dynastic history, as well as a digital backdrop that extends the stage and offers “magical windows into completely different realms,” according to Shen Yun’s website.

“I just loved the colors, and how well [done] the coordination was,” Ms. Kumari added. “I love the whole thing of color coordination, but the whole screen as well as the dancers coming across—it was just very lively and it just got your attention there.

An integral facet of Shen Yun is its emphasis on classical Chinese dance. With its world-class trained dancers, Shen Yun offers a unique glimpse into one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world.

“During the whole dance, it was very prominent—it just enhanced the whole dance altogether,” said Ms. Kumari.

But even despite the sequences of breathtaking dance, Ms. Kumari found the most excitement in the use of color.

“I like it,” she said. “Very few things can grab attention that much, along with the dance,” she said. “I know dance is good all the time, but there’s something which adds to it, which was the color.”

“I loved that,” she concluded.
