SAN FRANCISCO—Robert Meyer, who runs his own food import business, happily sampled the splendor of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the War Memorial Opera House on Jan. 5.

“I like the way it was presented,” Mr. Meyer said. “The symmetry of it is just astounding, it’s wonderful—beautifully presented.”

He was accompanied by a woman who did not give her name. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “I liked it all.”

Shen Yun is a New York-based production, a revival of China’s divinely inspired cultural heritage, and hailed as the premier classical Chinese dance and music company in the world.

The two were intrigued by the endless trove of Chinese legends, myths, and literary classics that Shen Yun draws from. Through the wonder of classical Chinese dance and folk and ethnic dances, Shen Yun brings these stories to life in vivid detail.

For example, Mr. Meyer enjoyed the dance Mongolian Chopsticks.

“I liked the sticks, you know, that was good. After all the dancing, which is beautiful, it kind of wakens everything up again, and then we start all over.”

“The backdrops are very pretty,” his companion said.

She was referring to Shen Yun’s state-of-the-art digital backdrop with vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one.

“The way it’s presented is incredible,” Mr. Meyer added. “You have all the dancers, and then they go into the distance [on the backdrop screen] and they come out [onstage]. The combination of photography and the visual effects are astounding.”

He said he would tell his friends to come see Shen Yun for themselves.

“They should come and see it. You can’t describe it, you have to see it.”
