MINNEAPOLIS—New York-based Shen Yun brings to life 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. It is the first company to present Chinese Classical dance to the world on a large scale. On Feb. 23, Shen Yun brought its performance to the City of the Lakes.

Charles Rick, former school superintendent in Minnesota was in the audience. “I was very impressed with the show overall and the athleticism that they are displaying and just the synchronization of the music and the acting,” he said.

Thinking about how Chinese culture is depicted through the segments of the show, Rick related that it’s “just about the history of China and how they view it versus how we may view it here in the U.S. It’s just a good way of looking at history from somebody else’s perspective, from their perspective.”

“I would say it’s about dance and culture and art and athletics and music. It’s very interdisciplinary,” Mr. Rick stated. “If I was going to teach a lesson in interdisciplinary arts in schools, I would use this as an example.”

Tom Twiss, an independent consultant, came with his family to see Shen Yun and celebrate his daughter’s 10th birthday.

Mr. Twiss said, “I am really enjoying the performance. The precision of the dancers and the skill of the dancers is amazing. I like the bowl dance, that was very good, very impressive.”

In Mongolian Bowl Dance, dancers “emerge balancing bowls on their heads in a dance of welcome,” the program states. Often audience members are amazed that the dancers do not drop bowls off their heads, despite intricate dance steps.
