MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Shen Yun Performing Arts is not to be missed, according to Mississauga City Councillor Ron Starr.

“The show is wonderful. It is so enthusiastic—the colour and the costumes and just the people doing their particular dances,” said Mr. Starr at the midway intermission of the Saturday evening performance.

Mr. Starr was among the packed audience at the Living Arts Centre, the fourth of five sold-out Shen Yun shows to play there.

“I’m so happy I’m here seeing it for the first time. I’m just totally taken back at the type of performance it is,” he said.

Shen Yun presents mainly classical Chinese dance, a tradition passed down through imperial courts and Chinese opera houses over thousands of years.

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 on a mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture. That culture, notes Shen Yun’s website, has been nearly lost after 60 years of communist rule.

The show includes ethnic dances and folk dances, as well as dances depicting historical tales and literary classics.

“I’m very, very pleased to be here and I’d recommend it for everyone to come and see the performance,” Mr. Starr said.

Mr. Starr said Shen Yun shows how China has evolved over thousands of years, as well as the challenges facing civilization.

“As someone who is not Chinese and someone who enjoys performances I’m learning something this evening and I think that is important too. We should never quit learning from ourselves and other cultures.”

He said Shen Yun was an opportunity to learn something about Chinese culture.

“I’ll be one of those people that recommends [to] everybody that they should be out here taking a really good look at the performances and enjoy themselves.

“Exhilarating. Unbelievable. You have to see it.”

Mr. Starr began his political career 2010 after serving as President of Deanlee Management Inc., a family-owned development, planning, building, and land use consultant firm.

He chaired the board of Enersource Hydro Mississauga for six years and during part of that time served as acting president and chief executive officer.

Mr. Starr was also chair of the Municipal Electrical Association in 1999, representing some then 250 municipal electrical distribution utilities in the province of Ontario.
