NEW YORK—Children who aren’t yet assigned to a school can be enrolled by their parents at any of 10 new pop-up enrollment centers that opened Tuesday. The enrollment centers are for students who are new to New York City or who are re-entering city schools after a time away.
The centers are designed to be “one-stop shopping,” said Susan Cofield, deputy chief of the Office of Student Enrollment. “If you have an elementary school child, a middle school child, and a high school child, you can come here and get placement for all three.”
A steady stream of children and parents had been through the center located at The High School of Fashion Industries on 24th Street on Tuesday.
The day had been a success for Tiffany Dilone, 26, and her five-year-old daughter Solie. “It was bit hard to find, but when we got here the service was good,” Dilone said. The family was pleased with the outcome: Solie was learning Mandarin at her childcare center and is able to continue after being admitted to Shuang Wen PS 184M.
There are 10 enrollment centers spread across the boroughs, with one in Staten Island; two in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx; and three in Brooklyn. The centers are open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 14, with the exception of Labor Day. Center locations can be found on the Department of Education website.
Elementary and middle school students who have zoned neighborhood schools have to wait until the first day of school, Sept. 6, to register at the school, according to the Department of Education. In areas where there is no middle school choice or no zoned schools, families should go to a registration center.
