BUENOS AIRES—Elsa Gafurri, a renowned entertainment reporter in Argentina, called Shen Yun Performing Arts “incredible perfection” after it played in Buenos Aires’ Teatro Ópera Citi on Saturday.

The dancers, she said, “are all very harmonic” in their performance. According to Shen Yun’s website, each dancer is trained in classical Chinese dance—a style that is both complex, highly expressive, and requires extensive training.

“I think it’s perfect,” Ms. Gafurri said. “I think we have witnessed the diverse epochs of dance in general, and [epochs] of the Chinese culture too.”

The performance draws heavily on ancient stories and legends passed down throughout China’s history, including how the civilization was created by the Yellow Emperor Huangdi.

“The backdrop of the show is very good on the stage and helps the rest [of the performance] a lot,” Ms. Gafurri continued, referring to the company’s use of a digital backdrop that shows elaborate and colorful scenes from many places and times: ancient China, forested landscapes, mountaintops, or the modern day.

The music of the performance also drew her attention. Shen Yun features a unique orchestra that fuses both Chinese and Western traditions and accompanies each separate dance. But there are also solo performances by world-class opera singers and erhu (a type of two-stringed instrument) players.

“And what I don’t want to forget are the voices of the people we’ve heard singing,” Ms. Gafurri said, describing the opera singers as “top level.”

Furthermore, Ms. Gafurri said that the performance was exciting and hopes the performance can return to Buenos Aires.

“I would broadly recommend this,” she said, adding that Shen Yun exudes serenity and poetic qualities.

Shen Yun will be in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Ópera Citi through Dec. 21.

New York-based Shen Yun has three companies that tour the world each year on a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
