NEWARK, N.J.—Samuel Pasquele, the president of an investment company, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on April 12.

He thought the performance was “spectacular,” the music “amazing.”

He added: “The performers are just astounding ... composition is really quite amazing.”

New York-based Shen Yun revives China’s rich 5,000-year-old culture, displaying ancient legends, ethnic dances, and classical Chinese dance, as well as scenes from contemporary life in China. The performances are accompanied by a traditional Western orchestra, including Chinese instruments.

When asked what element of the show he enjoyed the most, whether it be the dancing, the music or the digitally-animated backdrop, Mr. Pasquale said it was hard to describe his experience.

“Just every element [is] really quite exceptional. Everything is hard to express in a word or two, but everything collectively really compliments each other element, the music as well as the dance. The choreography is simply spectacular. It’s really quite enjoyable.”

Chinese dance combines graceful moves with more dramatic leaps and tumbling techniques. “It is able to transcend ethnic, cultural, and even linguistic barriers, taking this well-established Chinese culture and presenting its essence to the world,” according to the Shen Yun website.

“The countryside is beautiful. Seeing the show with the big screen in the background, and seeing the different landscapes really would make someone that knows nothing about the country see how beautiful it is,” added Ms. Puskar.

As a former dance student, she was very impressed with the skill of the dancers. “I felt like there is a space between the feet and the ground—they were so light, strong, effortless,” she said. Her mother agreed: “It did seem effortless, beautiful.”

Ms. Puskar was also intrigued by the dances depicting the hardships of people in modern China who are brutally persecuted for their spiritual beliefs. “It’s really quite moving, and I think it speaks well to people in our country here in the United States that tend to expect that tolerance … I think we need to be tolerant of everyone’s unique expression,” he said.

Third-Time Visitor Says Shen Yun ‘Fills the Heart’

Amber Ward, a former consultant, also went to see the matinee performance on April 12. However, it was already her third time seeing Shen Yun.

“It’s beautiful every year and it fills the heart,” she said. “I think if more people could slow their mind, and see the beauty in this, the world would be better,” she added.
