NEW YORK—The city’s entertainment industry has reached an all-time high this season, with a record 23 television shows being filmed in the five boroughs.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the city’s Media and Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver made the announcement on the set of “Pan Am” that is currently being filmed by Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “Pan Am” is a new ABC series about an airline in the 1960s.

Both Bloomberg and Oliver emphasized the contribution of the entertainment industry to the city’s employment rate. The filming of new and returning television series helped support 100,000 jobs for New Yorkers and over 4,000 local businesses are involved.

“A show like ‘Pan Am’ employs 400 people behind the scenes and generates activity for our local economy at places like lumberyards, fabric stores, and coffee shops,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We’re working to strengthen and diversify New York City’s economy and create jobs, and our thriving entertainment industry is a prime example of those efforts paying off.”

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations created the “Made in NY” Production Assistant Training Program in 2006 to help prepare the city’s disadvantaged and unemployed for entry level jobs in TV and film production. Many graduates from the program participated in the production of the 23 shows, with three being a part of the crew of “Pan Am.”

In addition to ABC’s “Pan Am,” which is set to premier on Sunday, Sept. 25, other television shows being filmed in the city include HBO’s “Girls,” CBS’s “Unforgettable,” and returning show “Gossip Girl.”

The entertainment industry contributes more than $5 billion to the city’s economy annually. Shows made in the city have been well received, with a record 110 primetime Emmy nominations this year.

“Film and television production is manufacturing for the 21st century, and it is a business New York City does exceptionally well,” said Douglas C. Steiner, chairman of Steiner Studios. “We have the best crews anywhere, and create the best content in the world.”

Brooklyn played a big part in the filming season with a number of premiering shows being filmed in the borough.

“Brooklyn’s big stage is a star on the small screen, from the ‘Cosby Show’ to current hits ‘Boardwalk Empire’—which is filming at Borough Hall today—and ‘Blue Bloods,’ which films at Broadway Stages,” said Borough President Markowitz. “So when you get tired of LALA land come to Brooklyn—or as I call it Hollywood East.”

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a growing urban industrial district that is home to many companies. It has added 2,200 jobs since 2001, and will continue to contribute more jobs for the next two years. Both the Navy Yard and the Steiner Studios are undergoing expansions.
