A story about a newborn baby who was abandoned in a forest only to be rescued by a stray dog (and “covered by CNN and CBS”) and was carried past a “busy road” and “a barbed wire fence” has gone viral--eight years later.
The baby was later taken to a “shed where the infant was discovered nestled with her litter of puppies ... definitely man’s best friend,” the post on Thursday reads. The post has a photo of a baby and a dog--not the same ones as in the real story.
According to The Associated Press in 2005, the stray dog “found the infant, clad in tattered clothing, in a poor neighborhood near” Nairobi, Kenya. The forest area that was referred to in the Facebook post was the near Ngong Forests in Nairobi.
“The dog apparently found the baby Friday in the plastic bag in which the infant had been abandoned, said Aggrey Mwalimu, owner of the shed where the animal was guarding its puppies. The seven-pound, four-ounce infant was taken to the hospital for treatment on Saturday,” the AP report said.
The dog was later called Mkombozi, or “Liberator.”
At the time, the baby was “doing well, responding to treatment, she is stable. ... She is on antibiotics,” said a hospital spokesperson.
On Thursday and Friday, Facebook users commented on the matter.
“This dog had more feelings for this child than the child’s mom. . . I rather be in the company of dogs than humans like this mom. . . So shameful for humanity,” one commenter wrote.
