Nintendo’s new video game console, the Wii U, was revealed to the public at the Nintendo’s E3 presentation on June 7th in Los Angeles.

The new console sports flat tablet-like controllers with a 6.2 inch touchscreen capable of displaying the entire game screen without the need for a television and has features like rumble, microphone, speakers, accelerometer, gyroscope, and front facing camera.

It is capable of supporting all existing Wii equipment and will also have access to the internet web pages.

The system will be able to use both your television and the screen on the controller simultaneously for separate images in many games involving both, such as Wii Baseball or Madden NFL.

One example of this working was demonstrated when the controller was used as a magnified scope for a sniper rifle against the background of the larger display screen. Another snapshot showed three users playing a multiplayer racing game in which the large projection screen was divided in half for two of the players and the third screen was displayed on the controller for the third player, essentially making multiplayer gaming possible without the need for a single television screen.

Also, because of different inputs on most televisions, one user may be able to watch a DVD or disk recorded movie whilst another may watch television.

Shingeru Miyamoto quotes that he is looking forward to “new styles of play, ones we haven’t even thought of yet.”

Plenty of third party games will be available for the system, hailing titles such as Dark Siders 2, Batman: Arkham City, and Assassin’s Creed.

John Riccitello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, made a brief appearance at the demonstration and spoke praise for the system and its innovative design, hinting at a cadre of future EA games to be developed for the new system.

Much was revealed about the new features of the Wii U, especially of its unique new controller and the ways it would interact with games on or off your television. This alone will bring boundless speculation and anticipation for the system. What wasn’t revealed about the Wii U however, was the release date or price.
