Gunfire has been reported at the Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington on Monday.

UPDATE: The Kitsap Sheriff’s Office has cleared the scene and says that there’s no evidence of gunshots.

Witnesses reported seeing a beat-up pickup truck at the time of the reported shots, reported the Kitsap Sun, and the Navy said in a news release that it could have been backfire from a vehicle.

The U.S. Navy alerted the public via Twitter that it confirms the reports.

It said that a shelter-in-place is in effect and that more details will follow. 

Local law enforcement believes “suspected gunfire” came from outside Naval Base Kitsap Bangor’s fence, reported the Kitsap Sun.

The Navy said in a news release: “It could have been a gunshot. It could have been backfire from a vehicle.”

It termed the lockdown as a “precautionary measure.”

The base serves as the host command for the Navy’s fleet throughout the West Puget Sound.
