Fans really wanted Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy to start dating after Dancing with the Stars, but at this point it’s looking like it won’t happen.
First Davis denied that the two were dating, then Chmerkovskiy’s brother claimed that the relationship was beyond romance and that Maksim wanted to protect Meryl.
Meryl chipped in again to call it an “amazing friendship,” seemingly trying to put the dating rumors to rest. Then a fellow dancer claimed that Meryl and Maks were just “acting” on the show, similar to what Davis’ figure skating partner Charlie White has described.
“I think they had a good relationship. All of us develop great relationships, Candace and I had a great relationship. We had great chemistry, we got along great, we laughed a lot. No one said ‘Oh are you guys like…’ because she’s happily married,” Mark Ballas said of his relationship with dancing partner Candace Cameron Bure.
“I don’t think — in my opinion — there’s anything going on there other than just a good friendship and they just had great chemistry on the dance floor,” he said. “If you’re not able to make the viewer or the audience feel like you’re dating or hooking up or wanting to go out, you’re not doing your job right. Dancing is about acting, you have to tell a story,” he told Bustle.
Now it turns out that Maks himself, coy about defining his relationship with Meryl, seemed to describe the relationship as more of acting than reality.
“Do you know what a showmance is?” he said in an interview for Social Life magazine. “When you spend three months very closely with someone . . . it is like a summer love. You have no choice but to get involved.” He didn’t specifically refer to Meryl.
Maks, a notable ladies man, said that his relationship with his ex-fiance Karina Smirnoff, with whom he performed recently on Broadway, was “explosive and hot,” for instance.
Maks’ other ex-girlfriends include Kate Upton, and he has also been romantically linked to Jennifer Lopez.
