The Peruvian ancient Inca site, Machu Picchu, has remained intact despite heavy rains, causing floods and mudslides in the surrounding area.

The death toll as a result of the floods has risen to 20 people and an estimated 35,000 people have been left homeless, Peruvian media reports.

At the end of last week, the last of 4,000 stranded tourists near Machu Picchu were airlifted out of the area, in an effort, which took four days and 12 helicopters. Peruvian media reported fears that the recent floods would scare off foreign tourists from visiting the country. Each year hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the Peruvian hallmark.
