Luis Alonzo Alfaro, 17, has been charged with murder in a deadly knife fight at Spring High School.

The fight broke out on Wednesday morning and left Joshua Broussard dead and three others injured.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that Alfaro admitted to the stabbing under questioning by sheriff’s homicide detectives.

The stabbing happened during a fight between several students in a school corridor. The sheriff’s statement says that during the fight, Alfaro pulled a knife and stabbed a Broussard to death and wounded three other students. The three survivors were treated at a hospital and discharged.

Alfaro is booked into a Harris County jail with bail set at $150,000.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Friday. Online court records list no attorney for Alfaro. A telephone call to a number listed with his home address connected to a fax machine.

Two other students who were taken into custody are considered witnesses in the case. The three injured students have all been discharged from the hospitals they were taken to.

School district officials have canceled classes at the high school for the rest of the week.

On Monday, officials plan increased security, according to a statement on the Spring Independent School District website.

An information line for parents has been set up. The number is 281-891-6575 and is open from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The stabbing disrupted the school and prompted a lockdown for several hours on September 4.

It is rumored that the fight was gang-related.

Authorities provided few details on what may have led to the fight, and no other information was available on the teenager who was killed.

“We believe a confrontation of some sort occurred ... that ultimately led into a physical confrontation that produced weapons,” Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. “There has been some information that this may have been gang related.”

The pastor of Deavean Bazile, 16, who was injured in the stabbing, denied that it was gang-related. The pastor denied gang violence was involved, saying it was “a misunderstanding that got out of hand” between people of different races—Hispanic and African American.

The conflict occurred at about 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Parent Tara Campbell said she received text messages from her daughter about the fight and that her daughter said students who witnessed the episode snapped cellphone photos of the victims as they lay on the ground.

Campbell said she intended to have her daughter home-schooled, saying she’s grown tired of fights at the school.

“Last year there were gang fights consistently,” she said. “This is ridiculous. This is an ongoing situation.”

Lakesia Brent said her son, a sophomore at the school, sent her multiple text messages asking her to come pick him up.

“He’s just afraid,” she said, adding that fights at the school were a problem in the last academic year.

Students were not checked through metal detectors, reported parents.
