Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh extended their wishes to the nation on the eve of traditional New Year.

According to a statement, the Prime Minister said that these traditional New Year celebrations remind us of the importance of farming to our economy and also the outstanding achievements of our farmers.

India has being facing persistent agricultural crisis and the Government recently has faced lots of outrage for its allegedly anti-farmer policies.

The government is utilizing the occasion of the Indian New Year to reach out to the nation with a positive message.

The Indian New Year, also known as Baisakhi or Vaisakhi in northern regions, inaugurates the country’s annual colorful-festival calendar, ushering fresh zeal among the youths.

The country celebrates traditional New Year across various states with regional music, dance, food, and community celebrations.

With the ever cherished unity-in-diversity concept among Indians, the festival is celebrated across the country in varied names: it is known as Vishu in Kerala, Bhog Bihu in Assam, Navreh in Kashmir, Ugadi in Karnataka, and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

“Vaisakhi is not only an occasion to celebrate but also a time to strengthen our resolve to contribute effectively to the nation’s prosperity, unity, and fraternity,” the president said in a statement.

“Let us on this joyous occasion resolve to fortify the secular and social fabric of our country,” he said.
