Although Louisiana officially has the most polluted beach water, four Great Lakes states complete the list for the worst five.

The states that rank as having the worst polluted beaches after Louisiana are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, in that order.

A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study released July 30 revealed that beach contamination is most often caused by rain carrying overflowing sewage into rivers and subsequently into beach fronts, according to media reports.

Last year was a relatively good year for the Great Lakes since the summer was dryer in the Midwest.

The NRDC report states that beaches in the Eastern states of Delaware, New Hampshire and Virginia are the cleanest.
