Police arrested 28 people Wednesday in a crackdown on tobacco trafficking that allegedly involved the Italian Mafia and native organized crime.
The Bonanno crime family, one of the five longtime families of the La Cosa Nostra, better known as the Italian Mafia, were in control of the Local 917 International Brotherhood of Teamsters union. Through their two members in leadership positions, they were able to use union members as clients in their crimes.
