The first case of swine flu in Bulgaria was detected on Monday. A 21-year-old male student tested positive for the  type A virus (H1N1), also known as swine flu. The student had flown to Bulgaria from New York on May 27 through Amsterdam.

The thermo detector at the airport failed to identify the virus in the passenger. He felt the first symptoms on May 29 and went to the doctor on May 30.

According to a report from the Bulgarian Ministry of Health, the young man has been duly isolated and treated with Tamiflu, and his condition is improving. Four of his closest contacts are being examined and so far there are no signs of the illness.

The Ministry also said that every day, Bulgarians with symptoms of the flu are being tested for the virus, especially those arriving from countries with swine flu. The Ministry said it will keep the public informed of the swine flu situation in the country.

The Health Ministry has also informed the World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Control about the first swine flu case in the country.
