NEW YORK—A display of classical Chinese culture wowed a sold-out audience at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Bernhaut, a freelance director and owner of his own production company, attended the performance on Saturday afternoon.

Shen Yun presents a “very deep culture [and] ... brings a lot to the event,” he said, adding that it is a “is a compilation of many disciplines.”

According to the New York-based company’s website, Shen Yun aims to revive the ancient and traditional culture of China through the arts. Classical Chinese dance is Shen Yun’s hallmark, and their live shows also feature a unique orchestra, a digitally projected backdrop, and elaborate costumes.

“I love the music, I love the orchestra” said Mr. Bernhaut. The company’s orchestra joins together two different musical styles—Western and Chinese—with instruments from each culture.

At the heart of the performance is dance. Classical Chinese dance is one of the most expressive and ancient systems of dance in the world, requiring much training and discipline, the company’s website says.

“The dancers exhibit tremendous technique and skill and flexibility and it is just beautiful and graceful,” he said, noting that it was the second time he saw the performance.
