China Confirms First H1N1 Case

Mainland China reported its first case of A/H1N1 influenza, a 30-year-old male recently returned from the United States.

Mainland China reported its first case of A/H1N1 influenza on Monday, a 30-year-old male who returned from the United States via Tokyo on May 7.

The patient, Bao, is a student in a U.S. university. Last Thursday he boarded a Northwestern flight from Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota, to Tokyo, and on May 8 took flight NW029 to in Beijing. On May 10 he took flight U882 and arrived at Chengdu, Sichuan Province at 13:17 Beijing time.

During his flight to Chengdu, Bao developed symptoms including fever, sore throat, coughing and impaired breathing. He then went directly to the Sichuan Provincial Hospital, where he was twice tested positive of the H1N1 virus.

The patient has been quarantined in a Chengdu hospital. Those who had close contact with him have also been quarantined for observation.

Chinese health ministry has announced Bao’s travel route and is seeking passengers who flew with Bao.

By May 10 A/H1N1 influenza has spread to 29 countries, with 4,379 confirmed cases and 53 deaths.
