Is your light out? Are you having power problems? Or did you simply forget your charger head at home? No worries! Charging your phone is now as easy as counting 1, 2, and 3 as all you need is an onion and a Gatorade! Weird right? But it looks like it works. Well, at least it is what a viral video has showed to millions of viewers around the world.

The way it works is frankly, very fascinating. Your device (phone or iPod) uses the combination of the onion and electrolytes from an energy drink to charge itself. Sports drink contain electrolytes (mineral salts e.g., calcium, sodium that is charged electrically) which help charge up your body and renew your energy. Apparently, this can also charge your batteries too. Amazing right?! Making it work is quite easy to do. All you need is:
  • Your phone
  • Charging cable
  • Sports drink (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.)
  • Screwdriver
  • Bowl
The screwdriver is used to poke two holes, each at opposite sides of the onion, and then the onion is submerged in a bowl filled with a sports drink. It is best to make sure the poked holes in the onion is completely covered by the sports drink so that it can be absorbed by the onion.

After 30 – 45 minutes, the drink should most definitely have reduced as a large quantity would have been absorbed by the onion. Plug your charger cord to your phone and with the other end, insert it into the onion. Your phone should light up immediately, I know, shocking right?!

The downside to this “hack”, however, is the presence of no actual proof that it charges the phone. Professional chemists say that it just sends a signal to the charging program of your phone that will then display the detail, but not actually charge the phone.

Also, continuous use of this method will most likely destroy your phone charging lead, so you should probably tread lightly with this so-called hack!
