Activities were held across Canada on Thursday to celebrate the country’s 143rd birthday.

In Montreal, aside from the few military or bagpipe bands, the annual parade on downtown’s Ste-Catherine St. featured sections from different ethnic communities living in Canada—from Panama, India, China, and East Europe.

On the other side of the country, Canada Day in Victoria included family-oriented activities such as a fireworks display and a “living flag” that incorporated 2,010 participants dressed in red and white. A main stage concert on the lawn of the B.C. Legislature featured some of BC’s best up-and-coming talent.

But the highlight of this year’s Canada Day celebrations was in Ottawa, the nation’s capital. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was on Parliament Hill with her husband, Prince Philipp, alongside Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife, Laureen Harper.

On July 1st, 1867, the British North American colonies got together to form Canada, a federation of four provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. [etssp 66]
