WASHINGTON—“The dances, they flow. When they dance, and one listens to the accompanying music, it’s just a terrific feeling,” said a businessman at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Bill Pyle owns of a fencing business, and said he enjoyed seeing Shen Yun on Jan. 22.

It sounds as if Shen Yun got its wish for Mr. Pyle. According to the Shen Yun program, “Our hope is that you will leave the theatre today feeling uplifted and renewed.”

Mr. Pyle’s wife is from Thailand. He said she was the reason he came. “My wife is from Thailand, and she introduced me to this,” he said.

“I love the performance,” he said. The dancers “flow with the music.”

Mr. Pyle said the themes Shen Yun explored were “about civilization, humanity, celebration of life, and the goodness of it.”

The program states that, “Shen Yun’s productions draw their inspiration from China’s 5,000 years of civilization. Values such as compassion and loyalty, kindness and bravery lie at the heart of traditional Chinese culture.”

According to Mr. Pyle, “The themes behind the dance and the music were interesting for me.“ He was engaged by “how the show incorporates good and evil throughout most scenes. This was very interesting.”

One of the theatrical innovations of Shen Yun is “state-of-the-art graphics technology. Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one. The backdrops are magical windows to completely different realms,” according to the Shen Yun website.

Mr. Pyle found it extraordinary “when the performers step out of the backdrop onto the stage. It is awesome. It’s really something.”
