World leaders and thousands of supporters honored Burmese democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi on her 65th birthday, June 19 according to exiled media Democratic Voice of Burma.
President Obama in a statement on Saturday called on Burma to again release Suu Kyi, the only imprisoned Nobel Peace laureate. He also called on the Burmese junta to release “all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally and to allow them to build a more stable, prosperous Burma that respects the rights of all its citizens.“
Suu Kyi has been under house arrest in Burma for nearly 15 years.
The Elders, a group of global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela that includes laureates Desmond Tutu and Kofi Annan, left a seat vacant at their meeting as a tribute to Suu Kyi.
