NEW YORK—From December 2010 to April 2011, 10 bodies have been found along the beach in Long Island.

Investigators originally thought that multiple killers were involved, but the most recent theory is that all these cases may be linked to one person.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer suggests that there is a single serial killer based on the victims’ similar manner of death and the fact that the five identified victims all worked in the sex industry. The other five victims have yet to be identified.

So far the victims include eight women, one man, and one baby. The man, though unidentified, was dressed in women’s clothing when he was found, which led investigators to believe that he was also working in the sex industry as a male prostitute.

The investigation was launched when police found a body on Dec. 11, 2010, while they were looking for Shannan Gilbert, a prostitute who went missing in May 2010. Further investigation led to the discovery of the other bodies strewn along the beach. Gilbert is still missing.
