Ontario’s doctors are taking their battle over medical fee cuts with the provincial government to the courts.

The Ontario Medical Association announced on Tuesday that it is applying to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for a review of the government’s negotiation tactics and unilateral imposition of cuts to fees and programs on the doctors of Ontario.

Following weeks of negotiations with the OMA, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced in May that the province is going ahead with cuts to some of the fees paid under the $11 billion Ontario Health Insurance Plan. The cuts sum up to $340 million.

The government says the money saved will be invested into community care nurses and home care services.

OMA says the $340 million in service cuts were imposed rather than negotiated in good faith, arguing the government has breached the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
