Keeping your closet organized actually saves time and money. How come you ask? For one, if you know what is in your closet you are less prone to buy duplicate clothing items or buy clothes that really don’t coordinate with other clothing items. Also, if you color code your closet, maybe you will find that you wear too much black, or you have three white button-down shirts, in which case you can make adjustments in your wardrobe. If your closet is well-organized, it is easy to find clothes quickly and efficiently in the morning. Of course, quickly finding the right outfit saves much time and stress.

Here are some suggestions:

Take Inventory Twice a Year

I do this at the end of summer and at the beginning of the year. The best advice I can give you is if you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in a year—toss it. Have a Goodwill box ready to dispose of clothes—even if they are cute and in good condition. This clears out unwanted clothes giving you a better perspective on your total wardrobe.

Seasonal Storage

When summer ends, there is no need to keep your shorts and tank tops in valuable drawer space. So get big plastic storage containers and put them to rest for the season. As the summer clothes go in, the winter sweaters come out.

Odd and End Storage

Find a place for everything you own! Don’t just put your smaller pieces of your wardrobe in random places. Belts, scarves, nylons, and workout clothes all need their space. Buying small bins or baskets is a great way to give them the space they deserve. I keep my socks, nylons, and other personals in separate bins in my closet versus in the top draw of my dresser.

Color Code:

I color code my shirts and light weight sweaters. This will first give you a great visual of your closet and make you feel organized! Second, it easy to coordinate your clothes if they are organized by color.

Don’t be Hung-Up

Decide what items are best hung up and which may be better folded. Bulky sweaters take up way too much room in a closet, so it is best to fold. However, light-weight sweater and cardigans should be hung.

Put Away

If you have another closet space not in your home, you may consider to use this space for clothing items not worn frequently like formal dresses and suits. Again, this will give you more room in your closet.

Make It a Great Space

Make your closet a fun space by making it smell good by making a perfume sachet, hanging framed photographs, and giving your closet proper lighting. Hooks can also offer a good way to minimize disorder. But I don’t just put everything on a hook. I have a hook for my bathrobe and pajamas, jeans, workout outfit, and hoodies.
