GRAND BLANC, Michigan—On the edge of a police barricade near the church where four people were killed in a shooting and fire in Grand Blanc on Sept. 28, Dan Beazley stands for hours holding a 10-foot wooden cross near a makeshift memorial of flowers.

A real estate broker from Northville, around an hour’s drive from Grand Blanc, Beazley takes the cross around the country to locations that have just experienced a catastrophic event.
