When doctors told Taiwanese entrepreneur Huang Chaoming that he had just two months to live, the news struck him hard.

As the chairman of a thriving agricultural technology company, Huang was known among friends for his energy and love of sports. He never imagined that cancer had already been growing inside him for years.

Huang shared his incredible journey through cancer, along with his wife, on “The Stories of Life,” a podcast hosted by Yu Xin for the Chinese edition of The Epoch Times’ sister media, NTD Television.

“It’s fairly recent, around July 20, 2022,” Huang recalled. “I sought treatment for kidney stones. Three days post-treatment, the stones hadn’t passed, causing excruciating pain, which led me back to the hospital. Upon further examination, it was revealed that a tumor was located there.”

The scans revealed a rare tumor—a carcinoid over three inches in diameter in the cavity between his heart and lungs. The doctor said it was about the size of a baseball.

Huang had been active in sports for decades, playing table tennis every day for two to three hours. However, two years before the diagnosis, he had noticed something was wrong.

“Climbing from the second to the third floor would leave me breathless,” he said. “I began to wonder if I was getting older and if my physical strength was declining. So I stopped playing table tennis and switched to a different form of exercise—walking. My wife joined me, and I always felt like I was trying to keep up with her.”

The discomfort lingered, unnoticed for years, until the cancer surfaced. It was a slow-growing but deadly tumor with grim statistics.

“Upon further investigation, there were 70,000 clinical cases in the United States,” he said. “In these cases, once you’re diagnosed with a carcinoid, if you follow through with the medical treatment and opt for chemotherapy, people typically pass away within a year.”

A Life-or-Death Choice

When doctors reviewed Huang’s case, surgery was not recommended, because the tumor was pressing against his heart and blood vessels, making removal too dangerous. The doctor advised immediate chemotherapy at the most aggressive dosage.

The doctor advised that without chemotherapy, Huang’s life would be at risk within two months, and with chemotherapy, data suggested that people normally would have a year. Still, Huang hesitated.

“I asked him if I could possibly wait another two months to have another check-up to assess the condition before we make a decision on chemotherapy,” he said. “Without hesitation, the doctor immediately responded that if you forgo chemotherapy now, in two months’ time, you'd be in need of emergency care. It was a matter of life and death.”

To most, the decision would have been simple—fight with every medical option available. But for Huang and his wife, who had just lost her friend to cancer, the moment became a profound reckoning.

“I stood by a friend’s side throughout her chemotherapy journey,” said Huang’s wife, who declined to give her full name. “From the initial treatments, surgery, to radiation therapy, I was there for every step. I am very familiar with that pain. After much discussion, we decided to forgo the suffering. When it was time to go, he would go. That was our resolution.”

She and her husband decided not to go through with the chemotherapy.

An Unexpected Encounter

As fate would have it, in early October, just days before his diagnosis was confirmed, Huang was invited by a friend to go sailing.

“He wanted to take us out to distract ourselves,” he said. “He organized a small gathering of five or six friends to go sailing. One of them was a Falun Gong practitioner.”

During their trip, the conversation turned to life, death, and faith. Huang told his friend about reading the “Thiaoouba Prophecy,” but his friend recommended “Zhuan Falun,” the principal text for Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. After its release to the public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi, Falun Gong spread rapidly in China, with state media even lauding the benefits it was having on society. However, in July 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) turned on the practice, launching a brutal persecution campaign aimed at eradicating the practice and its adherents within six months. Millions were subjected to arbitrary arrest, torture, forced labor, attempted brainwashing, and even forced organ harvesting. The persecution is ongoing.

In Taiwan, where Huang lives, Falun Gong practitioners are able to practice their faith freely, since the self-governing island is not under the CCP’s rule.

Huang had long been familiar with Falun Gong, but his views had been heavily affected by the situation in China.

“Because we had frequent interactions within mainland China in the past three decades, we were brainwashed with a mostly negative impression of Falun Gong,” he said. “For 20, 30 years, I was disinterested in Falun Gong. That evening, I found myself searching for information online. I was curious about the true nature of ‘Zhuan Falun.’ I found the book on the website. To my surprise, the content was focused on teaching kindness and how to be a good person.”

He began reading daily and learning Falun Gong’s five sets of exercises. At the time, Huang was learning the practice for spiritual cultivation. He did not expect Falun Gong to have an impact on his cancer.

A Remarkable Change

Within two weeks, Huang began noticing subtle changes. His chronic issue of a runny nose and poor sleep began to improve.

He also began to sleep better, breathe easier, and feel stronger. Huang’s tumor used to cause pain when pressed, with muscle and bone aches all the time. Four months after practicing, he was able to climb from the first floor to the fifth without feeling winded, with his strength returning. Then came something even more extraordinary.

“One night, as I was in bed, I suddenly felt as if there was an earthquake,” Huang said. “I called out to [my wife] to confirm if it was an earthquake. She responded, ‘No.’ Nothing in my room was moving, not even the curtains. Despite that, the shaking continued intensely. It went on until I fell asleep. I had no idea when or if it stopped at all. This occurred every evening, night after night. I believe, for three or four months. What exactly is it? It’s what we come across while reading [‘Zhuan Falun’], as [Li Hongzhi] says in the book. It refers to the adjustment process you undergo. There could be numerous Falun exercises that adjust your body, working on various areas.”

Huang said he used to spend lots of money on health supplements every year but none of them worked. However, after practicing Falun Gong, everything changed.

Healing Together

Huang’s wife began practicing alongside her husband, at first reluctantly.

“To be honest, I had no intention of practicing Falun Gong when I first started,” she said. “[But] he was on his deathbed, and I wanted to support him to the end.”

After a week, she noticed something herself. She used to wake up in the morning consistently with a headache. However, that suddenly went away, which never happened before.

Her long-term angina and heatstroke-like symptoms also began to disappear. “All these conditions improved after I started to practice Falun Dafa,” she said. “There were many miracles in that short period of time.”

Although her initial intention was only to help her husband, it turns out that practicing Falun Gong helped her as well.

A New Understanding of Life

Now, nearly two years later, Huang’s vitality has returned. His doctors, once certain he had only weeks to live, are astonished by his condition—his cancer completely disappeared. However, for Huang, the transformation has been more than physical.

“As humans, whether you’re wealthy or poor, upper or lower class, you face one inevitability: birth, aging, illness, and death,” he said. “But I believe that after practicing Falun Dafa, you can discover a new path. And this new path is entirely different from anything you’ve encountered before. In the past, discussions about cultivation were vague and unclear, leaving you utterly confused, but Falun Dafa explains everything clearly—how to cultivate and how to be virtuous, [and] how one accumulates virtue and how one generates karma. A clear and distinct great way guides you on a spiritual journey. I find this to be so remarkable. So my conviction is steadfast.”

Huang smiled in the podcast interview, recalling the words he and his wife now say often, “Falun Dafa is good. There are no better words to express this.”

Reflections

Today, Huang’s strength and optimism radiate through his words. He describes feeling healthier than when he was much younger and living with gratitude.

For the couple, what began as a journey through fear and uncertainty has become one of renewal and faith. What they initially thought was the end became a new beginning for the couple.
