In modern times, interest in healthy living has grown tremendously. Many people want to feel their best for as long as possible, which has led to greater awareness around organic food, clean water, fresh air, and maintaining overall wellness.

One result of this growing awareness is the rising popularity of cleansing and detoxification. Springtime in particular inspires many people to reset their habits. As the weather warms and energy increases, people naturally feel motivated to make positive changes.

Detox programs have become widely promoted by celebrities, social media, and even conventional grocery stores. But an important question remains: are all detox programs actually healthy for the body?

While cleansing can be beneficial, many modern detox approaches can be overly harsh. Extreme fasting, starvation-style diets, and aggressive detox regimens can stress the body rather than support it.  For this reason, it’s important to understand how detoxification actually works so your approach supports the body rather than working against it.

Many people believe cleansing must involve discomfort. They endure strict diets and intense restriction while repeating the phrase “No pain, no gain.”

In reality, when the body experiences high levels of stress, it activates the sympathetic nervous system, often called the “fight or flight” response. When this happens, the body prioritizes survival over repair and regeneration. Detoxification, however, works best when the body feels safe and supported. The release and elimination of toxins requires a relaxed physiological state.

Mild fatigue or hunger during a cleanse can be normal. Periods of lighter eating can give the digestive system a break and allow the body to redirect energy toward repair. Some temporary tiredness may also occur while the body processes toxins.

But prolonged suffering, such as severe hunger, insomnia, irritability, or brain fog, is a sign that the body is under too much stress.

Despite popular belief, the body actually requires nourishment in order to detoxify effectively.

How the body detoxifies

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views health as the harmonious functioning of the body’s organ systems. When the organs are strong and balanced, the body is energetic, adaptable, and capable of both activity and deep rest.

Two key processes support this vitality: nutrient absorption and waste elimination.

Digestion extracts nutrients from food to nourish the organs and tissues. At the same time, the body must continuously remove waste products. These include unused food components, environmental toxins, and metabolic byproducts created during everyday bodily functions.

The liver plays the central role in detoxification. The blood constantly circulates through the liver, where impurities are filtered out and essential nutrients are preserved.

In TCM, spring is associated with the liver, and the energy of growth and movement. After the slower, inward energy of winter, nature awakens. Plants begin to grow, animals become active, and the environment shifts toward expansion and renewal.

Human beings follow similar rhythms. In spring, many people naturally feel more energetic and motivated. We may feel inspired to clean our homes, exercise more, and spend more time outdoors.

Winter often encourages heavier foods and reduced activity. Spring, by contrast, brings a natural shift toward lighter foods, increased movement, and better hydration.

When we follow these seasonal cues, cleansing happens naturally. We begin to crave fresh greens, fruits, and lighter meals. These foods contain fiber, minerals, and plant compounds that support digestion and detoxification.

Warmer temperatures and increased activity also encourage us to drink more water, which helps flush waste from the digestive system.  At the same time, many people naturally eat slightly less as their bodies require fewer calories for warmth. This gentle reduction in food intake can allow the body to redirect energy toward regeneration.

Because this process is intuitive rather than forced, metabolism remains balanced and the body continues receiving nourishment when it needs it.

This natural and intuitive process is a healthy approach to detoxification.
