Did you know that in the U.S., about 20% of homes rely on a private septic system rather than a public sewer line? That means routine septic care is an important part of home maintenance for many households. Below, I’m going to discuss how to properly maintain a septic system, but first, we need to understand how the system works.

💡 How a Septic System Works

Basically, wastewater from the home flows through the house sewer pipe into an underground septic tank. Inside the tank, heavier solids settle to the bottom and form a sludge layer, while fats, oils, grease, foam, and other lighter substances float to the top to form a scum layer. The clearer liquid in the middle, known as effluent, then flows out to the drain field, where it slowly filters into the soil. The soil provides further treatment by helping remove some pollutants and bacteria from the wastewater.
