In the U.S., about 20% of homes rely on a private septic system rather than a public sewer line, making routine care an important part of home maintenance for many households. Before discussing how to properly maintain a septic system, it is helpful to first understand how the system works.
💡 How a Septic System Works?
Simply put, wastewater from the home flows through the house sewer pipe into an underground septic tank. Inside the tank, heavier solids settle to the bottom and form a sludge layer, while fats, oils, grease, foam, and other lighter materials float to the top and form a scum layer. The clearer liquid in the middle, known as effluent, then flows out to the drain field, where it slowly filters into the soil. The soil provides further treatment by helping remove some pollutants and bacteria from the wastewater.
