A suspected chemical leak on May 7 at a Shanghai lab has sparked concern after leaked screenshots of internal group chats suggested that students felt unwell after an unauthorized experiment involving a highly toxic chemical compound.

Regulatory authorities and the research institution involved—the Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences—have not publicly confirmed the incident.
