A recently-divorced mother was “secretly dreading” Valentine’s Day with her break-up still fresh, but her 4-year-old son saved the day and brought the waitress to tears.

Max Schofield escorted his mom Emma to a meal at Pizza Express in Torquay, United Kingdom on the holiday to cheer her up.

After the meal, he tried to hand over his jar of pennies to pay, but the tearful waitress said she and other staff members were so moved as they watched the mother and son on their date that the meal was on the house.

“I have always brought my son up to be thoughtful, kind, caring and appreciate even the smallest gestures. After a quick grocery shop, my son told me to close my eyes (which I kept partially open to see what he was up to) and he proceeded to choose me a Valentine’s card and a small teddy bear in a gift bag. My eyes welled up as we continued to shop,” Emma wrote on Facebook.

“Today he took me to Pizza Express (of course I was the designated chauffeur) and wanted to treat me to a special meal. He also brought his jar of pennies with him. After a delicious three-course meal, we went to pay. We were greeted with a waitress in tears who had watched our special ‘dinner date’. Looking at her eyes welling up, I also began to shed a tear.
“She gave us our meal free of charge as a gift from Pizza Express in Torquay as she was so touched by what my four-year-old son had done. This extremely kind gesture left me crying with happiness and holding onto my son with pure joy.”
The post was liked and shared hundreds of times, with many people praising Emma and her son.

“Well Emma you have obviously brought your son up with impeccable morals—he will grow up to be a lovely young man,” wrote Alison Studdy.

“What a wonderful little lad you have raised! already treating ladies beautifully. You should be very proud of your hard work. I am a first time mum and I hope my son will turn out as thoughtful,” added Hayley Ellen.
