Federal Government Will Soon Stop Paper Check Payments

The Federal Reserve processed 36 million government checks in 2024.

The federal government will phase out paper checks on Sept. 30 for most federal payments, the Department of the Treasury said in an Aug. 14 statement.

“If you are one of the few people who still receive a federal benefit check, it’s time to switch to an electronic payment method,” the department said.
