GRAND BLANC, Mich.—Holding her dying father, who had just been shot inside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lisa Louis looked directly into the shooter’s face, according to a letter posted to Facebook by her sister on Sept. 29.

Moments before, 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford allegedly crashed his pickup truck into the Grand Blanc Township Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, opened fire, and set the church ablaze.
