Space Mountain closed: Disneyland closed three of its attractions on Saturday to review its safety protocol after an Occupational Safety citation.
After a contract worker was seriously injured performing maintenance on the Space Mountain attraction at Disneyland, the park did not address the safety issues that caused the accident, according to a citation issued by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) issued April 12.
The ride was shut down on April 13 as Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., reviewed its safety protocols.
The accident report was filed in 2006, after which, states Cal/OSHA: “[Disneyland] failed to adequately correct these known fall hazards that existed on the exterior of Space Mountain. Furthermore, Disneyland Resort failed to have approved anchorages or approved tie-backs for contract employees to attach to when performing scheduled exterior building maintenance.”
Disneyland also closed the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Soarin' Over California for review. All rides, including Space Mountain, were closed voluntarily, Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said.
“We constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors, and we are reviewing certain protocols,” Brown said.
Disneyland also failed to have a required Operating Procedures and Outline Sheet available for Space Mountain. The citation states that both violations must be remedied by May 15, 2013—the penalty is only $675.00.
