Remembering 9/11 Photographs

New York Historical Society will host an exhibition of selected photographs taken by professional and amateur photographers in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center beginning Thursday, Sept. 8. Also featured are letters written to police officers and firefighters, objects that were placed in makeshift shrines around New York, and drawings of the National Sept 11 Memorial (designed by architect Michael Arad with the assistance of landscape architect Peter Walker).

Sept.11 10th Anniversary Commemorative Concert

The premier 9/11 tribute in town, this event will feature musicians from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera and be hosted by actor B.D. Wong at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre of Symphony Space on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Spoken tributes will be offered by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and others. Music by Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Wagner, and others. Poetry by Emily Dickinson, Emily Bronte, William Wordsworth, and others. Symphony Space is located at Broadway and 95th Street.

Art from End of Ming Dynasty

The collapse of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and conquering of China by Manchu tribesmen sets the historical backdrop for a Hong Kong art exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday, Sept. 7. “The Art of Dissent in 17th-Century China: Masterpieces of Ming Loyalist Art from the Chih Lo Lou Collection” will showcase more than 60 landscape paintings and calligraphies from leading artists of that time, including martyrs Ni Yuanlu and Huang Daozho (who stayed loyal to the Ming Dynasty after the collapse) and Bada Shanren and Shitao (descendants of the Ming imperial house who became Buddhist monks to escape persecution during the Qing Dynasty).

Met Opera Opens with ‘Anna Bolena’

The Metropolitan Opera opens its season with Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” on Monday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. The 19th century opera tells the story of the tormented second wife of King Henry VIII, who went from Queen of England to a woman betrayed and imprisoned. The ill-fated queen is played by Anna Netrebko. Directed by David McVicar. Sung in Italian with Met titles in English, German, and Spanish.

West Side County Fair

Enjoy a little country charm right in Manhattan at the West Side County Fair at Riverside Park South (around West 66th Street) on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Now in its ninth year, the fair includes carnival rides and games, music, square dancing, sideshow performers, a petting zoo, and greenmarket. The Green Acre environmental corner will feature hands-on activities for kids about environmental awareness, green living, and animal care.
