Dr. Juan Jesus Ortiz-Iruri, having worked in Nairobi, Kenya, since 2011, was set to move to England just a week after he was killed in the Westgate mall terror attack.

Ortiz-Iruri, 63, was a Peruvian health consultant working on program development in Kenya, until he was killed by attackers with the al-Shabab organization in Nairobi, Kenya, Saturday.

He did freelance work, and had consulted for UNICEF and the World Bank in the past. He had been in Kenya since 2011 working in maternal and child care and development. He was developing interventions in this area to help achieve Millennium Development Goals. He had worked in Liberia, Nepal, and other places in the past. He had also been in Kenya on work terms previous to the one beginning in 2011.

Ortiz-Iruri was just wrapping up his time in Kenya, and planned to move to Liverpool, England, this week, reports the BBC. He was due to take a full-time post at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in its Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH). Ortiz-Iruri had worked with the center on projects before.

Professor Nynke van den Broek at the center, told the BBC: “All at CMNH have been affected by Juan’s death under such shocking circumstances. His loss will be felt by us all both professionally and personally.”
